DOG RISING

Clara Furey, Canada

dance performance

About Dog Rising' With its celestial bodies launched into orbit, vibrating in lustful and hypnotic ritual, Dog Rising reflects the life cycle, the dynamic flow of matter. From primitive impulses to gestures that are sometimes sexual, sometimes mechanical, Clara Furey's new creation comes together as a polyphony of pulsating bodies, by turns dissonant and in unison. The choreographer pursues his exploration of physical phenomena, which began with Cosmic Love. She turns her attention to the way sound vibrations penetrate the bones, the way our skeletons absorb shock, and listens carefully to the presence of the body as it fully manifests itself.

As a starting point for his physical research, Fury looked at bone conduction, a way of hearing sound as it resonates in a spiral path through bone. She prefers to imagine that the vibrating blows strengthen us, not break us. Rather than dramatizing the shock so that we experience it on an emotional level, she frames it as something our skeleton must survive. Dog Rising opens the door to spontaneous pleasure whose ripples and beats send our emotions oscillating like waves.

Clara Fury is a choreographer and performer based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. She explores the codes that travel in and through different art forms. It seeks to promote the awakening of the audience's and performers' sensory perceptions, giving them emotional immediacy, direct access. In 2017, she choreographed her first group work, Cosmic Love. She also performed 90 performances of her solo song When Even The as part of the MAC exhibition honoring Leonard Cohen. In 2019, she created Rather a Ditch, a solo piece performed by Céline Bonnier. With Dog Rising (2021), Furey concludes his exploration of tension and immobility, releasing previously pent-up energies in a performance focused on constancy, groove and pleasure.
