The feminine flamenco formation LaboratoriA will present its new show ¿Que quiere la niña?

LaboratoriA are five dancers, singers and instrumentalists from Barcelona. They formed the group in 2017 as a laboratory for artistic experiments and for deconstructing the stereotypical roles of performers in flamenco. In the new show ¿Que quiere la niña? (What does the girl want?) LaboratoriA connects its experimental explorations in flamenco with important aspects of popular culture. Based on a single musical style – pregón – sung by street merchants the five performers focus on actual problems that affect them as women, artists and citizens.

LaboratoriA are Aina Nuñez – dance and vocals, Violeta Barrio – dance and vocals, Cristina López – vocals, percussion and electronics, Ana Brenes – vocals, Isabel Laudenbach – guitar and percussion. The group has four shows so far: Una mujer fue la causa ("The reason was one woman") (2017), Y perdí mi centro (“I Lost The Focus") (2020), LaboratoriA ("Laboratoria") (2022) and ¿Qué quiere la niña? (“What does the girl want?") (2023).

Each of the performers in the group has worked throughout her career with such great artists as the flamenco guitarists Chicuelo and Ricardo Moreno, the dancer Andres Marin, the pianist Chano Dominguez, and the group Las Migas, who has been presented at the Jazz Plus Fest in 2006 in Sofia.

Specially selected repertoire in the show Que quiere la niña? demonstrates the exploration of tradition in a contemporary dialogue with electronic sounds, voices and dance, and defends popular culture, community connections and joy as a transforming force.

The performance is saturated with spontaneity, self-esteem and femininity in an exquisite combination; a theatrical narrative is added to this, in which the true desires and aspirations of the artists themselves are surprisingly revealed. The song, the dance, the guitar and the electronics come together in a casual way with a strong presence on stage to show the contemporary flamenco, without questioning the heritage.

The flamenco show¿Que quiere la niña? is organised with the kind support of the Embassy of Spain in Sofia.
