World-renowned dance artists Ziya Azazi and Marion Crampe are bringing “Pietà 2.0” to Sofia’s Toplocentrala for its second residency, following the initial phase at Teatro Café Müller in Torino, Italy. This contemporary and spiritual dance performance, inspired by Michelangelo’s iconic “Pietà” sculpture, explores themes of human connection and hope for a brighter future. Combining Marion Crampe’s aerial artistry with Ziya Azazi’s modern whirling dance, a project is still in development and will continue evolving in Sofia. Ziya Azazi shares his vision for the project, stating, “We are reimagining the ancient bond between the divine and the human in a way that resonates with the challenges of our world today, emphasizing hope. Rather than focusing on Christ’s death, ‘Pietà 2.0’ envisions his ascension to heaven alongside his mother. This performance is about the possibility that humanity can transcend its limits through unity and awareness.”
“Pietà 2.0” delves into various relationships—between mother and child, father and daughter, lovers, or friends—demonstrating how individuals can support each other in rising to new heights. The performance imagines a future where humanity connects more deeply with the divine, unlocking a greater collective potential. Drawing on Nietzsche’s philosophy that “Man is something that must be overcome,” the piece reflects the human desire to transcend limitations and reach a divine state. It also incorporates Rumi’s teaching that “Love is the force that unites and elevates us,” emphasizing the power of divine love to drive unity and growth.
This work in progress offers audiences a profound and transformative physical and spiritual experience. “Pietà 2.0” invites reflection on the idea that, despite our challenges, humanity can collectively rise to a higher level of civilization through shared consciousness and unity. The world premiere of “Pietà 2.0” will occur on January 29, 30, and 31, 2025, at Toplo Centrala in Sofia. This event marks the culmination of the second residency, after the project’s first development phase in Torino. “Pietà 2.0” promises to deliver a groundbreaking performance, blending modern art, spiritual exploration, and deeply moving physicality on stage
