The idea of sharing this information with people creating or curating visual art is to promote already established methods for adaptation and accessibility for the visually impaired, hearing impaired, and individuals with mobility challenges at exhibitions, events, galleries, and museums. "Art with Disabilities" is a series of exhibitions, each edition presenting new challenges for the human senses and adapting a specific group of people with disabilities to visual art.
Presented through 3D projection mapping, the previous edition developed audio guides for the visually impaired, allowing them to experience an exhibition created entirely with projections. These audio guides provide information that sighted individuals usually receive visually. Each visually impaired visitor, in addition to the synchronized explanations with the projections, has the ability to control the audio information based on their movement within the space. All information is also adapted in Braille.
For people with hearing impairments, there are subtitles, sign language, light signals to guide them, and a sensory vest that enhances the experience through vibrations, providing information about the dynamics of the exhibition. The upcoming exhibition will feature 3D-printed real-life images of the personalities presented in "Art with Disabilities," allowing the visually impaired to understand the shapes of their faces through touch. For those with mobility issues, portable ramps are installed to secure problem areas throughout the entire space.
About the Upcoming Exhibition
"Art with Disabilities" is an exhibition showcasing 11 personalities who changed the world with their achievements, regardless of their disabilities. Each edition builds upon the previous one by adding new experiments with the human senses through interactive installations. Additionally, each subsequent event focuses on a specific group of people with disabilities and fully adapts them to digital visual art, enabling them to attend exhibitions without limitations.
The upcoming edition aims to create a digital exhibition through projection mapping that is fully accessible to a visually impaired audience. At the same time, the project resembles a miniature version of the popular digital art museums in recent years, which showcase the lives and art of Van Gogh, Dali, Gustav Klimt, etc., through projections. A system of 6 projectors will cover the entire space with projections, while the sensory section offers 4 interactive installations. These installations provide visitors with the opportunity to read Braille, listen to music through vibrations, connect two underutilized senses, and familiarize themselves with manual alphabets.
The project is part of the Cultural Events Calendar of Sofia Municipality.
