_____

On May 31, 2026, from 16:00 to 18:00, the finissage of the exhibition “Uneven Balance” will take place at Cube Gallery – Regional Center for Contemporary Arts “Toplocentrala”, during which we will reflect on the work of Maria Kefirova. The exhibition is the first large-scale presentation in Bulgaria of the work of the choreographer and artist Maria Kefirova (1975–2025). It brings together videos, drawings, texts, sound installations, and performance recordings that trace the working process at the core of her choreographic practice.

The preparation of “Uneven Balance” began in collaboration with Maria Kefirova, but unfortunately she passed away during its realization. The exhibition was completed based on her ideas and proposals by curator Valiya Mihaylova, in collaboration with contemporary dance researcher and former artistic director of DNA Space DNA – Space for Contemporary Dance and Performance, Mira Todorova.

On the occasion of one year since Maria Kefirova’s passing, we invite all her colleagues, friends, relatives, admirers, and collaborators to write her a letter addressed specifically to her, which can be sent to Regional Center for Contemporary Arts “Toplocentrala”, 5 Emil Bersinski St., Sofia, or via email: visualarts@toplocentrala.bg

All letters will be collected and handed over to Maria’s mother, Mira Nyagolova, who will choose some of them to be read during the finissage.

Maria Kefirova developed as a choreographer and performer between Europe and North America. She created her own artistic system in the field of contemporary dance and performance, combining movement, images, sound, signs, and objects. She was a frequent guest in Bulgaria as a resident artist and with various performances, part of the “Migrating Body” program of DNA Space. Her last stay in Bulgaria was in 2023, when she worked on The Beach and Other Stories as part of a residency at the Regional Center for Contemporary Arts “Toplocentrala”.
