Time in Dimitar Genchev’s painting possesses a psychological depth. Layer by layer, fragments, remnants, colours, figures, and landscapes are revealed—like an old album in which images overlap and accumulate. Some fade, others rise to the surface, while others remain as barely perceptible traces of something that was there before.

The paintings are built slowly, through processes of accumulation and removal. Genchev layers images and painterly strata, then peels away, erases, and removes parts of the surface. In doing so, he opens up fissures between different times, images, and colours. Within this process, intention encounters chance, and the making of painting becomes a kind of dialogue with the painting itself.

The exhibition brings together works created at different moments, from 2008–2009 to the present. Alongside new works are paintings that had been set aside or forgotten and are now brought back into view, as well as works to which the artist has returned and reconsidered. In this way, Layers also becomes an encounter with one’s own past—a space in which different moments in the artist’s practice coexist.
