THE OCEAN OF LIFE / VOICES

In her new exhibition, Berlin-based Bulgarian artist Nadezhda Georgieva presents a large-scale multimedia installation. The Ocean of Life / Voices marks an important stage in her artistic development — a moment of deep self-reflection and transformation.

"Voices" is the first part of a larger body of work entitled The Ocean of Life. In it, the artist explores themes such as identity, memory, fantasy, and the interaction between personal and collective experience. She creates a dynamic connection between digital and physical worlds. The viewer is invited to immerse themselves in mystical mountains, vibrant colored plants, and fantasy characters. This surreal scene is enveloped in a multi-layered soundscape in which Nadezhda Georgieva recites her own texts. Her voice reverberates both close and distant — sometimes narrating, sometimes whispering, sometimes insisting. The words form their own layer in the experience — a mental topography between poetry, reflection, and stage presence.

The artist also includes four sculptures in the exhibition — three half-human, half-insect anthropomorphic metamorphoses and a composition of plant-like hybrid organisms with long tentacular stems, branching out and reaching toward the sky. Each stem is a separate sculpture, participating in different compositional configurations. Georgieva molded, sculpted and painted them with a clear artistic fingerprint — their bodies and heads comical, as if they had sprung from children's fantasies. The vivid color palette of greens, red-oranges, yellows, and pinks — characteristic of the artist's style — defines the visual language.

In her artistic practice, Nadezhda Georgieva moves towards an ever deeper understanding of her own artistic voice. Her personality occupies an increasingly central place in her artistic narratives. They are turned inward — toward the search for traces of past experience and future fantasies on which to build.

Nadezhda Georgieva (born 1973) moved to West Germany in 1987 when she was only 14 years old. In the 1990s, she worked in the music business with international artists, including Moby. Following this she worked in advertising, managing large multimedia projects for more than a decade. She has lived in New York and Switzerland. Six years ago, she rented a studio in Berlin and devoted herself to art. In a short time, she developed a rich and multifaceted body of work encompassing painting, sculpture, and virtual reality. She merges wood, ceramics, textiles, paints, sews, embroiders, creates virtual worlds, and integrates spoken word performances. "The Ocean of Life / Voices" is her second solo exhibition, following her debut with "The Neurotic Ballet of Beauty and Destruction" in 2024 at the Goethe-Institut in Sofia.
